Have you Ever Lost your Place?

One day, I was walking in my kitchen, minding my own business. Then, all of a sudden, my mom calls me over to show me a unique bookmark, from The Economist. Across the bookmark are the words: “Never lose your place in the world”. The first thing that I thought when I read the bookmark? I think that’s Bullschlaha. Why? We all lose our place at some point in our lives. Sometimes, we fall into great depression, or something happens that throws our life completely off course. Eventually, we end up losing our place, and it takes great effort to find it again.

So yes, a few years ago, I completely lost my place in the world. When I embarked on my journey of pain and hospitalization, I had no idea what direction my life was headed, and I had no idea what to expect. It wasn’t until a few months later, when I realized that I could write about the life messages in movies, that I found my place in the world again.

When we lose our place in the world, is usually a time for our greatest periods of growth. What about Steve Jobs? When he got fired from Apple for the first time, he was shocked. He didn’t know what to do with his life. He had lost his place in the world. Then, he started a little company called Pixar. Eh, no big deal….

Big deal. Pixar went on to become one of the biggest animation studios, and they made films such as Toy Story, Ratatouille, WALL-E, and Up. If Steve Jobs was never fired, and never lost his place in the world, he may have never started Pixar.

Most breakthroughs happen during a time of uncertainty.<narcissism> I created this awesome website as a result of getting lost in this world. If I didn’t get lost, I also wouldn’t have such cool monkeys around the house, and on my mouse-pad. They brighten my day! </narcissism>

So the next time someone tells you: “I don’t wanna lose track of everything!”, “I don’t know where that will lead me!”, “I don’t wanna lose my place”, or “Never lose your place in the world”, just tell them: If it weren’t for people losing their place in the world, how would anyone be motivated to do something better than the status quo?

Thank for this post, but also for this all blog. I found it from the little article you have written on how about to deal with pain. One of my friend shared me the link and told me the title of the article. I replied to him, the only way to deal with pain is probably to accept it. Gosh I was wrong about this. As loosing your place in the world can be a good thing, because it let you get up and find a new direction in your your life, giving to others is also the only way of finding peace in our innerself and certainly from pain.

After I have read your article I asked myself: didn’t I forget about my pain the other day I was helping the little comity (laclovering.com) I’m involved with. And God yes that I completely forgot about it busy as I was.

I’m an eternal optimist, and sometime life is truly difficult. But as in the best movie I probably have seen in my life : Into the wild, I will say that happiness is only good when shared.

    Jean-Philippe,

You’re very welcome. And thank you for the comment, and taking time out of your day to write to me! I really appreciate it.

You’re absolutely right about forgetting your pain. You’re just too busy helping someone else, that your problems fade into the background! And then, you might as well put on the ‘optimist glasses’ :)

Everything in life, is so simple. But sometimes I’m so stubborn about it. Helping others = happiness. I insist on making it so difficult. Ex: “I need the best tool”. “I need the best system”. “I need more experience”. Stuff like that, which doesn’t make any sense!

Into the Wild looks like an amazing movie. I will watch it!

    Thank you!
    Josh Lipovetsky.
